Buckingham Medical Students
The following guidance is for Medical Students studying at Buckingham Medical school. Whilst on their GP placement the Medical school has arranged for the use of the Improval platform to securely record patient consultations.
Guidance from Buckingham Medical School
You will review recordings with your GP facilitators and peers during your PCF teaching. (You will be notified by the facilitator team regarding the specific schedule for your site).
We require all students to review the GMC guidance on patient recordings, before undertaking any recorded consultations: https://www.gmc-uk.org/professional-standards/the-professional-standards/making-and-using-visual-and-audio-recordings-of-patients
Being able to video a patient consultation for educational purposes is a genuine privilege, based upon the patient’s trust, willingness to help with your training, and their informed consent.
It provides the most authentic way of reflecting upon your own consultation skills, whilst not intruding on the consultation itself. You will be able to not only visualise your own consulting style, but add meaning through supportive and constructive feedback from your peers and GP facilitator.
- Only use Improval to record consultations
- Never record any form of intimate examination
- Only share recordings within the PCF teaching
Consent
The University requires students to obtain both written and verbal consent from patients, both before and after the consultation. Verbal consent should be recorded.Consent forms should be handed to the Practice manager and not leave the practice site.
Instructions for the Improval platform
Email invite
Shortly after starting your GP placement you will get an email from Improval with a link to set your password. This will be to your official medical school email. It is important you register using the link in this email to mark your Improval subscription as paid for by the Medical school. If you don't get an email but your peers have received one please simply contact us and we can resend it.
Apps
The app records on your device and then uploads the recording to a secure server for review on the Improval website.
If you can't use the app, for example you don't have the UK App Store, then you can visit app.improval.com on your device, visit the Recordings page then from the Actions menu select Record a video.
Whether recording using the app or the website you will be asked enter a title to help you identify the recording. Don't use the patients name or any other identifiable information in the title.
It is a good idea to record a short test video before starting and then watch it on the Improval website. Any problems please don't hesitate to get in touch - there is a Contact us link at the bottom of every page.
Two-Factor Authentication
On first using the Improval website you will be asked to setup 2 factor authentication. This is using a one time password* or mobile text messaging. We strongly encourage you to set up both and use a password app for the one time password. You will also be given backup codes to use - only store these securely in a password management app.
* a password that regenerates and normally set up using a QR code
Reviewing recordings
Consultations must only be reviewed with GP facilitators/peers in your scheduled on campus teaching sessions. This is done by logging onto the improval.com website, and playing the recording.
We request that students delete all recordings from the Improval platform, using the “Delete” option in the “Actions” menu on the recording page, as soon as possible, once the specific recording has been used in teaching. Or if you are unable to use a recording it should still then be deleted.
